Pool Garden

The clients wanted a low-maintenance poolside garden with all-season color at their summer home in a sandy loam with large pockets of clay.

Cottage Garden

Ryan transformed this barren "dog zone" into the cottage garden the client always wanted. While Ryan's original design included a low boxwood border and traditional English cottage garden plants, he decided opt for a broader plant palette, employing "right plant, right place" principles.

Front Lawn Begone

Ryan completely reimagined the front yard of this 1920 Craftsman to reflect the owners' modern laid-back style. Working with the native sandy soil, Ryan created a naturalistic, bird- and pollinator-friendly landscape with year-round interest, using drought-tolerant, low-maintenance grasses, perennials, and shrubs.

Tabula Rasa

Overlooking a seaside lake, this wide front garden presented as many challenges as it did opportunities. Ryan added an element of wildness while maintaining continuity with the formal design of the existing landscape. Ryan removed much of the front lawn to create large borders along the front sidewalk and driveway. The major concerns were strong winds off of the lake and Canada geese in the winter. By backing the front border with a long, low boxwood hedge, and including many small structural shrubs and perennials, Ryan effectively created a formal garden framework that provided a barrier from geese and could withstand damaging winds. This was balanced by a naturalistic palette of grasses, asters, and other prairie plants; adding a sense whimsicality and attracting birds and other pollinators.

Little Garden, Big Aspirations

Just a couple blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, this Victorian home has it all...except a proper yard. Working with a garden space smaller than that of your average New York townhouse, Ryan managed to make an outsized impact.

Urban Oasis

Working with a limited budget, Ryan transformed his own backyard for instant privacy, vibrant color and four-season interest--transforming this neglected townhouse garden using the existing hardscape.

Business Meets Pleasure

Ryan worked closely with the clients to create an outdoor space that could function as both a tranquil retreat from city life and a backdrop to the home office for their interior design company.

Rooftop Gone Prairie

Ryan created a low-maintenance container garden for a busy newlywed professional couple. Special emphasis was placed on drought and frost tolerance, by using hardy succulents, asters and prairie grasses, able to withstand the highly variable New England climate.

Plant Lover's Private Botanical Garden

This plant-loving client had an extensive plant collection, but his garden lacked balance, and plants were not situated in suitable locations for their various water and light needs. Ryan redesigned the garden using the existing plant material, created a master plant inventory, and placed signage throughout the garden for easy identification.

Garden Restoration

When Ryan first arrived, he found this once majestic garden abandoned and neglected between owners. He worked to put the garden back into shape: pruning and weeding, bringing in new plant material that worked with the existing design, correcting soil deficiencies, fixing irrigation problems, and replacing poorly situated plants with ones that would thrive in the given light conditions.
